Our Centers
Bela Mundwar , a small rural community near Hazaribagh in Jharkhand, is where Ugam started their first center in July, 2015. This was followed by a center at Hupad and now our centers are at Morangi, Kadma and Baheri around Hazaribag. At each center our two teachers work hard for two and half hours after school with 40 children from grades 2 and 3. As you walk into an Ugam center you will see a class with childrens’ work on the walls along side poems and words. Our children start with an assembly (where children may be talking about a poem or what makes them happy or which day of the week it is) and then spend time with hindi, English, math and art.
Lesson Plans
Ugam is actively seeking partnerships with like minded organizations so that the methods of teaching can reach more students. We have developed lesson plans in hindi keeping in mind our rural context. Lesson plans cover hindi, math, english and art activities. They are aligned to the Learning Indicators defined by the NCERT.
Teacher Training
At Ugam we conduct our teacher training on topics as diverse as How Children Learn,A Using songs in classes, How to implement lesson plans effectively and role of a Teacher. Our teachers receive lesson plans for engish, math, hindi and art activities. Here is what our teacher Ajay had to say, "गणित में नयी नयी गेम से बच्चों का उत्साह बढा है. प्रशिक्षण में यह भी नया जाना कि गणित की पढाई में चित्रकाम और रंगोली भी बनाई जाती है."
Baseline Assessment
After an initial round of needs assessment we decided to design and implement our own assessments for hindi, math and english. The assessment are designed based on the NCERT guidelines as well as the state textbooks for the relevant grades.
The baseline data shows huge gaps in the childrens' learning across almost all parameters like, spoken language, alphabet recognition, vocabulary, number sense, place value etc. We are actively working towards bridging these gaps.
